What you should know about how AI describes your bank
Answer engine optimization for banks is about improving how accurately and prominently your institution appears in AI-generated answers. Bank marketers want to increase the likelihood that their institution is cited, and even better, that AI platforms surface links back to the bank’s product and thought leadership content. But along with the opportunity to build awareness and drive traffic, marketers must identify and manage the potential risks. This article provides context for Beyond the Arc’s infographic about managing AEO for banks.
3 Key takeaways for improving AEO for banks
- Start with a thorough assessment of your existing content, customer personas, compliance factors, and differentiators.
- Benchmark your bank against competitors in AI-generated answers. EMARKETER research found that Capital One consistently led its category for much of 2026, with a 19% mention rate.
- Develop deeper insight into the questions customers actually ask about your products and solutions.
The buying journey is no longer a linear step-by-step process. Customers may research options, compare providers, learn about new solutions, do more research, and consult online review sites. This doesn’t happen in a predictable sequence, and people may loop back whenever they surface new information. AI is playing an increasingly important role and reshapes how people gather information, evaluate it, and compare banks and fintech providers.
Consumers responding to a McKinsey survey “said they use gen AI for financial tasks at least monthly. Top-cited tasks included understanding products (38 percent), getting investment advice (34 percent), and providing comparisons (33 percent).” McKinsey went on to recommend that “Banks should consider building on classic SEO by developing robust generative engine optimization (GEO) capabilities.”
In practical terms, let’s consider what answer engine optimization for banks means for marketers.
Identify the questions your prospects are asking AI
Search engine keywords aren’t as important as they once were, and question-based prompts have supplanted them. In Beyond the Arc’s in-house analysis of our own content, we learned that as of August 2026 Google provides AI Overviews for 91% of the 300 keywords that we track, up from 31% in November 2025. The implication is that even when your site ranks among the Top 10 blue links on Google, AI Overviews will dominate the attention. SEO isn’t dead, but to maintain visitors and downstream lead generation, your bank must become part of AI answers.
To position your bank for the generated answer, you have to understand and anticipate users’ questions. You can do some initial exploration with your LLM of choice. Ask AI the kinds of questions prospects might have about your products, services, and expertise. Review and analyze the answers. What’s missing? What comes through clearly? Do you understand why your bank does, or does not, show up?
We see Personas and Journey Maps as valuable tools for AEO for banks because they can help you to adopt a customer lens and identify the prompts you want to track. Thinking about your ideal customer profile (ICP) is not the same thing. ICP assumes that someone is in the market in the first place. A customer-centric analysis using personas starts with the problems that people are trying to solve. The journey map lets you visualize the steps they take as they try and meet their needs. This perspective applies to both consumers and prospective B2B buyers.
There is data that you can use to assess AI search optimization for banks. Unfortunately, that data is still quite fragmented and even paid tools provide only a partial picture.

Make your content easier for AI to use
The quality of AI-generated answers for banks depends in part on the source material AI platforms can find and interpret. LLMs have very particular ways that they search, absorb, and incorporate content. Researchers found in a 2026 study of 21,143 AI citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overview/Gemini, and Perplexity that “evidence density” has a strong influence on what content is cited. The content structure, including schema markup as well as HTML headings, lists, and tags, is also important. For example, the same study noted that content with more headings outperformed other pages by 12.5x.
John Mueller of Google’s search team shared similar insights. In a 2026 article from SEO Roundtable he said, “it’s just so much easier for machines to read machine-readable data instead of trying to understand your page.”
There’s one technical point that will block you from being included in AI answers. Each AI platform has a bot that enables it to search the web and index content. For example, OpenAI provides the following guidance on how to get your website to appear in ChatGPT search results:
For your site content to be included in summaries and snippets in ChatGPT, make sure you aren’t blocking OAI-SearchBot. If necessary, you may need to update your robots.txt file, to ensure OAI-SearchBot has access.
Clear and well-structured website content gives AI a better chance of getting your bank right. Be explicit about what you offer and where your expertise matters. Make important product details easy to find and understand. That clarity helps your customers, too. The goal is not to write for AI instead of people. It’s to make the information clear enough for both to find and understand.
Address gaps in your website content
Your website may do a great job of explaining the products and services your bank offers. But will AI tell the same story? AI can miss key services or misstate product details. As prospects use AI to research banks, those gaps can shape which banks make the shortlist.
When an AI chatbot leaves out important details about your offerings, look at how you are presenting the information on your website. Those details may be buried, spread across multiple pages, mentioned only briefly, or explained in a way that is hard for AI to interpret.
For example, your bank may have deep expertise in commercial lending. Maybe you are particularly competitive in a lending niche like healthcare equipment financing. What evidence do you present so this is clearly supported on your website? If you’re a regional bank in the southwest and your private wealth practice specializes in supporting ranchers, you’d want that expertise to be explicitly mentioned. However, sometimes those details get taken for granted on your website. Finding those gaps helps you focus on the source content that needs attention.
Third-party sources can influence what AI says about your bank
Importantly, citations are heavily shaped by information that is written about you by others. Take a look at this list of some ways this can impact AI citations.
Top 4 reasons why ChatGPT might misstate your product’s details
- Summarized information. “ChatGPT may generate simplified product titles and descriptions based on information it receives from third-party providers to make results easier to read.”
- Reviews. “…model-generated summaries are based on reviews from public websites and are intended to highlight common user likes and dislikes about a product.”
- Incorrect pricing. “Product listings shown by ChatGPT may include prices, which we receive from third-party providers.”
- Mistakes. “Since the model interprets user intent, it can occasionally make mistakes.”

Information provided by third parties is generally outside of your direct control. However, clear messaging that you reinforce across your website, social media channels, press interviews, podcasts, YouTube videos, and other content helps your content to weigh more heavily in share of voice. In analyzing visibility factors, the search optimization platform Ahrefs noted in December 2025 that, “Brands with more mentions across different contexts (blog posts, anchors, video transcripts, descriptions, titles) are more likely to appear in AI responses.”
For banks, when a chatbot provides incomplete or incorrect information, particularly about something as important as fees, this can create negative sentiment toward the bank. People my feel frustrated, even if the information that they relied upon was not provided by you. The negative sentiment from incorrect AI-provided answers can drive down net promoter scores (NPS) and customer satisfaction (c-sat) metrics. Even more troubling, you can see how this might cause UDAAP concerns or drive regulatory complaints.
Our recommendations for strengthening a bank’s web content align with these tips from McKinsey.
Tips for strengthening content to improve answer engine optimization
- Publish clear, structured, and trustworthy material designed for decision-making
- Offer plain-language product explanations
- Add transparent pricing and eligibility information
- Employ scenario-based guides that answer pertinent customer questions
Some banks are consistently emerging as leaders in AEO
Despite the complexity of answer engine optimization, some banks are becoming leaders. The EMARKETER AI Visibility Index tracks banking and financial services. Based on data from ChatGPT, the Q2 2026 report noted that Capital One was the top-ranked company in the credit card category for the last six months since March 2026. Research quoted by American Banker in July 2026 stated that JPMorganChase “has an outsize influence on popular large language models like ChatGPT and Claude.”
There are some positive notes for banks, particularly if your bank has a more modest web presence. You can start your AEO efforts by improving on just a single platform. Ahrefs suggests that “For a brand with modest search volume, backlinks, and web mentions, ChatGPT may be the best entry point into AI visibility, since it appears to be less heavily gated by traditional SEO authority metrics.” Tracking AI-generated answers for banks can reveal both visibility gaps and places where products or expertise are being described incorrectly.
AI search optimization for banks is not a one-and-done exercise. Keep testing questions, assessing answers, finding gaps, strengthening content, and tracking performance over time.

Frequently asked questions
For answer engine optimization for banks, before you make changes to your bank’s website you need to assess your content and identify gaps. Start with the information customers actually need to make a decision. Product pages should spell out pricing, eligibility, key features, and any specialized expertise your bank has.
AI search optimization for banks benefits from pages that make a clear point and support it with evidence. One 2026 study of over 21,000 AI citations found a strong relationship between evidence density and citation performance. And pages with more headings outperformed other pages by 12.5 times.
Measuring AEO for banks requires more than one source because the available data is still fragmented. Bing Webmaster Tools reports AI citation activity, Google Search Console tracks visibility in Google’s generative AI features, tools such as Semrush test selected prompts and competitors, and website logs can show when AI crawlers request specific pages. Banks can add a consistent set of customer questions to see whether they are appearing more often and being described more accurately over time.
In creating AI-generated answers for banks, ChatGPT may be working from a mix of sources, some current and some not. OpenAI says product information can be simplified, drawn from third-party providers, or incomplete, and the model can also misread what a user is asking for. That makes outdated pricing, vague product descriptions, and missing details especially risky for banks.
AEO for banks should start with an assessment of what AI platforms currently say about an FI’s products, expertise, and competitive strengths. Compare those answers with the questions customers actually ask, then look for gaps in the bank’s website content, third-party information, crawl access, and supporting evidence. The first priorities should come from places where an inaccurate or missing answer could affect customer consideration or materially misrepresent the bank.
